Why we do what we do:
When I published my first book in 2006, I had the resources to start my own company, but I lacked the knowledge to implement it. Although I did a lot of research and spoke with many self-published authors, I didn't understand the business aspect and as a result I chose to publish through a subsidy publisher (also mistakenly called self-publishing company).
I chose to allow a third party company to publish my book because I didn't want the headache of dealing with the design process that entailed making my book happen. So I took the easy route and paid in excess of $2,500 to get my book in print.
There is nothing wrong with utilizing the services that some of these companies offer as long as you go in with realistic expectations and understand that you are going to pay for the services that you require. Using the services of a third party company is a viable option if you're not looking to build a business or if you only have plans to publish one book.
